ARTIST STATEMENT

In my work You can see the animals like whales or owls, or the universal elements like the moon or stars. These are related to my personal experiences. When I was a high school student , I took part in biology club, not an art club. There was an old museum of natural history in my high school where I could see many specimens of insects and stuffed specimens of birds, etc. Consequently I became interested in the biology club, I used to catch the insects and observe the birds in the mountains and the fields. I think  the memories of activities in biology club are affecting my artwork even now.

I have especially treated whales in my paintings because they are marvelous, dignified creatures. I think that the destiny of whales that swim through the abysmal depth of the blue sea resembles the destiny of human beings.

I paint  many shapes and piece them together. there are two meanings for this.

First, I think that I was impressed by the traditional Korean quilt called Jogakbo which is usally made by housewives, not a professional artist. They are composed with colorful shapes and  natural lines. When I was a child, I saw quilts my mother and grand mother skillfully hand-sewing these precious fabrics together to create patchwork.

Second, the objects in my work are animals, and also they represent human beings. Therefore the pieces and colors in objects show various sections of their lives. But then they will be gone as a piece as a dust in the wind or as a cloud in the sky after they die.

My works are on a thin but strong traditional Korean paper called Hanji which is an all-natural paper resistant to fading and light damage. Mixing pigmented powders with water and glue, or using tube colors I create a type of paint commonly used in China, Japan, and Korea that translates loosely as ¡°watercolor paint.¡± I build the paint up in layers, as many as 20. Then the colors will be brighter and deeper.

I think that my world of artwork is based on my individual experiences and thoughts. Therefore the animals in my artwork are represented as self-portraits of human beings and embody the existence of human beings rather than the objects of aesthetic contemplations. I hope that people have the time for reflections of their lives, so as they look at my work, as they feel the value of life and the wonder of the universe.
